Green Fleet parent handout
A free one-page handout for parents of new Green Fleet Optimist sailors.
What Green Fleet is
Green Fleet is the introductory racing fleet for novice Optimist sailors. Under the USODA Green Fleet Policy it is not scored, every sailor receives a participation award, and coaches may actively coach on the water. Learning, improving, and having fun come first.
What to bring
PFD with whistle · rashguard · closed-toe shoes · hat and sunglasses with straps · sunscreen · water bottle (tied in) · snacks · dry clothes · labeled gear.
How the day runs
Register → rig → competitors' meeting → harbor start → racing with a coach on the water → come in, derig, debrief.
Your role
Get your sailor there early. Let coaches coach. Keep shore support calm. You or a designated adult decide whether your sailor stays ashore when conditions are beyond their skills.
Five words to know
Notice of Race: the invitation. Sailing instructions: the rules of the day. Harbor start: when boats leave the beach. First warning: when the race clock starts. AP flag: racing is postponed; wait ashore.
