Shore School

Off-water Optimist instruction for sailors, families, and clubs.

Shore School is off-water Optimist (Opti) instruction. It starts with safety and fundamentals, then a pathway from first launches through Green Fleet and, when a sailor is ready, Championship Fleet Red, White, and Blue.

Lessons stay behind a parent account or a sailor username and PIN. This page does not show sailor names, photos, or accounts.

For parents

Help your sailor set skill goals you can practice, not only finish goals you cannot control. Short parent cards cover safety ashore, sailing instructions, and what to pack for a race weekend. A child never gets an email. You set a username and PIN if they continue lessons on a shared device.

For clubs and coaches

Point families here to see what Shore School covers before they create an account. Your club still runs the swim check and the on-water program. Telltales does not replace a certified instructor. Coaches can sign in with a parent account to review the same off-water pathway.

The pathway

Safe, fun, and high-quality instruction first. Racing is the next step when a sailor is ready and wants to give it a shot.

Shore

First Optimist skills: safety, boat parts, and an independent triangle.

Green

Introductory racing: learn, improve, and have fun in Green Fleet.

RWB

Championship Fleet Red, White, and Blue: speed, tactics, and fair racing when you are ready.

Parent

Short cards for families: safety ashore, sailing instructions, and skill goals.

A few sailing words

Sample terms only. The full sailing glossary is public. Lessons stay behind sign-in.

telltale
Yarn or ribbon on a sail that shows airflow. When they stream, the sail is working.
PFD
Personal flotation device. A life jacket. On and zipped before the hull leaves the sand.
Green Fleet
An introductory teaching fleet for novice Optimist sailors. Learning, improving, and having fun come first.
